The Toby Jug National Rally
Why the Toby Jug Rally?
I would assume that everyone has seen a Toby Jug, although these
days they are not a common site as they used to be. The Toby Jug
was first developed by Ralph Wood a Staffordshire potter with premises
in Burslam. The Jug depicts a seated man wearing a an English 'tricorn'
hat and holding a mug of beer and a glass or pipe. The original
mug is reputed to have been inspired by a song of 1761 called 'Dear
Tom, the brown jug'. Other Staffordshire potteries copied the idea,
followed by potteries around England and eventually other countries.
Toby Jugs today are now highly collectable.
To make the weekend more fun, bring along one, or as many Toby
jugs as you can find, then enter the Toby Jug competition - £1
to enter( all entry fees given out in cash prizes), and for the
more adventurous among you, come to the Saturday Evening bash suitably
attires, tricorn hat, waistcoat etc, ladies can wear whatever they
fancy and bring along your Toby Jug. And of course don't forget
the kids!
Don't worry about the weather during the day - if it rains, we
have a large exhibition hall to use so you won't get wet.
